Cars/Scrap Left Outside our Gate

We at D&W understand that some of you (our customers) aren't able to get out of work/haul your scrap before we shut down the scales for the day. Especially when it comes to cars, it's often just easier to do the hauling in the evening/on the weekend and park the cars on the side of our driveway. This allows you to drive here right after work to take care of the paperwork, weighing, taking your tires, etc.

And D&W is perfectly fine with this, as long as you do one thing:
You need to call us at 989-269-6829 and give us some information about yourself and your material!
In fact, even if you call after hours, there is an option on the night greeting exactly for this purpose. The second option on our night greeting says:
"If you've dropped off materials after hours for next day processing, please press 2."
Pressing 2 then tells you exactly what information to leave in your message. The information we need is:
Your name
Your phone number
The item(s) you dropped off
When you plan to return during normal business hours to have your material weighed/collect payment.
By leaving us your information it helps with a few things:
It confirms that you truly do intend to return to scrap your material (as opposed to just dumping/abandoning it on our property).
It prevents someone else from attempting to claim/scrap your material as their own (because by calling you've already told us that you were the one who dropped it off).
It provides us with a phone number to call in case 'life happens' and you don't return to scrap it in a timely fashion. We can call you to provide a gentle reminder that it's still here and waiting for you.
Why are We Bringing This to Your Attention?
This after hours drop-off option is currently being abused. At the moment there are 4x cars in our driveway that have been there for a month (one since mid-April). That is FAR too long! No one has called about them or notified anyone in the office that they plan to return for them. Therefore, we have no way of knowing if they have just been abandoned, nor can we call to find out if there are plans to scrap them anytime soon.
Remember: Dropping scrap off in our driveway is NOT a way to evade a blight notice on your property. And it is NOT meant as holding area while you wait for duplicate titles, VIN checks from the police, or lien releases on vehicles. (Aside from certain extenuating situations that have been pre-approved by our office staff.) You need to have your paperwork in order before you bring us your vehicles.

We provide the ability to drop-off after hours simply to make it easier for our hardworking customers to scrap with us. Ideally, vehicles or scrap left outside our gate should be there for no more than a week--haul it in on a weekend, and then stop by after work one day the following week to take care of the rest.
What is to Happen With the Cars Currently Outside Our Gate?
We will give the folks who dropped these cars off until Friday, June 6th, 2025 to do something about these vehicles. That's one more week. (Considering they've been in our driveway for a month, we feel that's more than fair.) After this point, we will consider these vehicles dumped/littered/abandoned, and will be working with the police to take the steps necessary to have them removed from our driveway.
This means that whomever dropped these cars off needs to show up with the proper paperwork to get them scrapped straight away!
And if you are reading this and have friends who scrap with us, be sure to ask them if they're the ones who left the vehicles in our driveway. Please let them know that they have until June 6th, 2025 to do something with them, or they risk police involvement and losing the money they would have otherwise collected for their vehicles.
We hate having to take action like this, but letting items sit unclaimed, without even a phone call for 1 to 1.5 months is long enough. We, too, still have to abide by blight ordinances just like everyone else in our neighborhood.

Help Us, Help You
D&W tries to assist our customers when at all feasible. Offering an after-hours drop off option is one of the ways we try to help (as is calling to offer a reminder when 'life happens' and you forget to scrap your material). However, it's quite disappointing when we try to help, but then run into a situation like the current one.
So going forward, please, please, PLEASE do your part--call us (989-269-6829) when you leave material outside of our gate, and be sure to return in a timely fashion to scrap it. Help us, help you!
